Dime Building Bank Vault Before + After - February 12, 2022
In 2013 I was given a tour of what was originally The Dime Building, and is now known as The Chrysler House, located at 719 Griswold Street in Detroit. We took photos of the lobby, and some other areas of the building. But the real interest was the basement, which was in rough shape, that housed the bank vaults and...a tunnel! More on that below.
Here is a view of the entrance lobby. If you have not visited this building, you should! If you want to take photos, check in with security first.
The basement housed the main bank vault, along with several others. The main one, originally, housed safely deposit boxes as well. This is what inside the bank vault looked like before the renovation, with an artist mural on top of the boxes. I am not sure who the artist is.
After the renovation, it is now used as a conference room.
The neatest part, however, was to step inside the tunnel that is accessed on the basement level. I honestly am not sure what this tunnel is used for, I assume its used for maintenance purposes. I cannot help but wonder where else this tunnel would have taken me in Detroit.
Here is the before and after of the main bank vault.
