My fall trip earlier this month to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park was my first time visiting this area. So beautiful! Even though we missed peak fall color...it happens. But we still saw a lot of interesting barns, mills, farms, etc.
However, this was one of my favorite stops of the trip - an old Shell station filled with old advertisements. I found this location outside Knoxville Tennessee before the trip, so it was on my pin map to visit. There is never any guarantee any of the buildings I see online will be there when I arrive (and it did happen to us on this trip!). That is just part of researching any location, you just don't know (sometimes Google Maps will give you some indication, but the maps aren't always up to date). But I was so glad this vintage find was still standing. Heck, the auto shop around the corner (who owns the property this old station stands on) is still in business. These old gas station signs stood in front of the shop, and of course some old jalopies next to it. What is an auto shop without some vintage cars nearby?
This station was covered with old advertisements, some of which I had never heard of. When I find a wonderful relic like this, I always count my lucky stars. So many are gone, with fewer and fewer remaining.
There were signs including Shell, 7 Up, Winston, Wonderbread, King Edwards cigars, Royal Crown, L+M and Kool cigarettes, Merita bread, Kern's bread and Teem soda (I've not heard of these last three before so I had to look them up!). The images below are closeups of the station.
Thanks for reading my photo story, while you are here, check out some of my other collections!
